The Victoria Police 911 Communications Centre is looking for men and women who can provide professional, high quality emergency and non-emergency communications to the public. Positions include:
- Efficient call screening
- Timely communication
- Effective prioritization of calls using state of the art technology
The Communications Centre is the hub for calls for service - emergency and non-emergency. Our centre currently employs approximately 50 regular and auxiliary staff. These positions offer paid training upon being hired along with an excellent benefits package. Positions include:
- Switchboard Operator
- Complaint Taker
- Communications Specialist (Police Dispatcher)
- Communications Supervisor
Employees have opportunities to advance to the position of a Communications Trainer. Employees can also participate in committees which serve to enhance the operations of the Centre.
What You Need to Apply
Basic Qualifications
Our Communications Centre is operates 24/7, and is the perfect environment for the fast-paced multi-tasker! Take a look at our list of basic qualifications to see what you need to apply for one of these exciting positions.
- High school graduation
- Typing speed of 60 wpm
- Completion of the Public Safety Communications Program
- Completion of the Office Administration program
- Two years of related experience in a police environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to pass the Security and Criminal Record clearance, a polygraph examination and a lifestyle integrity questionnaire
- Ability to work up to 12 hour shifts, including nights, weekends and statutory holidays.
Communications Centre Duties
The work in our Communications Centre is diverse and requires you to think on your feet. On any given day you will be connecting with the public, analyzing emergency or non-emergency calls, or operating a multi-line switchboard. - Operate multi-line switchboard, enhanced 911 system, electronic communications and standard office equipment
- Work efficiently despite interruptions
- Provide excellent customer service to the public and outside agencies
- Analyze calls, assess situations, and determine action and response
- Effective verbal and written skills
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Operation of VicPD computer systems, including computer aided dispatch and police records management systems

We serve an urban area of nine square miles with a population of approximately 97,000 people, in the communities of Victoria and Esquimalt.
