Forensic Services is part of the Detective Division and includes two connected but separate sections with a total of seven members:

  • The Forensic Identification Services section provides support services to investigators.  The section's role is to examine crime scenes and associated exhibits; locate, document and develop relevant evidence, and provide impartial reports and opinions to investigators as well as the Courts.  Members develop knowledge and expertise relating to development of fingerprints and fingerprint evidence, footwear comparison, collection of DNA, forensic video applications, blood spatter evidence, photography and many other areas.  Identification members assist investigators in crimes such as assaults, robberies, and homicides.  The section currently has five members including a supervisor.
  • The Computer Forensics Unit provides support to investigators by collecting, examining and interpreting digital evidence from computers, digital storage devices, telephones and other sources such as the Internet.  Members of the unit are highly trained and provide professional examinations of digital evidence in serious files involving assault, sexual assault, child pornography, drug and weapons offences and homicides.  There are currently two members of this unit.

Both of these sections are long term positions within the department, which is reflective of the level of training, experience and expertise members develop.  All members are sworn police officers and move into Forensic Services after spending many years in operational areas of the department.
