The Victoria Police Department K9 Unit consists of six dogs and five handlers. There are four German Shepherds and two Chocolate labs. The Shepherds are trained for a variety of tasks including tracking, searching for people or articles and clearing buildings/compounds.
The Labs are each single profile detection dogs. One is trained to alert the presence of explosive odours and the other is trained to alert the presence of narcotic odours. The training of the team (dog and handler) takes approximately three months and the handler keeps the dog at home when they are off duty.
