Volunteer Program Overview

The overall goals of the volunteer program are to support the Victoria Police Department's crime prevention activities and be of assistance to the public.

The volunteer roster is extensive and includes individuals of all ages and diversified backgrounds. Some of the younger members are considering a career in law enforcement and want to get invaluable experience. Others are students, office workers and retirees who are looking for a stimulating volunteer opportunity. There are two different roles: Crime Watch & Front Counter Services.

Crime Watch volunteers are expected to work one 3 hour shift a week and can select any of the following times:

Early Bird Speed Watch Team: Monday to Friday: 7:30am- 9:30am

Crime Watch Activities

1. Foot/Bike/Volunteer Van Patrol
Working in pairs and wearing distinctive Crime Watch jackets, volunteers patrol selected areas during daylight hours and report suspicious activity to the police. For those who choose bike patrol, a full training program is provided. The Department maintains 12 bicycles, riding gear and helmets.

2. Lock Out Auto Crime (supported by ICBC)
Volunteers check parked vehicles to ensure that they are locked and no valuables are in sight. A Crime Prevention Notice, noting the results of the audit, is left on the windshield.

3. Speed Watch (supported by ICBC)
Working with an electronic Speed Reader Board, volunteers monitor vehicle traffic in residential, school and park areas. Drivers exhibiting excessive speed are sent a warning letter.

4. Home Security Audits
Following special training, volunteers visit residences and make specific recommendations that will help make the property less vulnerable to break-ins.

5. Mature Drivers Program
In these two hour workshops developed by the BCAA, volunteers help seniors brush up on their driving knowledge and demonstrate how aging can impact driving ability.

6. Special Projects
Constantly responsive to the needs of both the VicPD and the community, Crime Watch volunteers carry out diverse activities that include educating retailers about debit card fraud, distributing public assistance flyers in the vicinity of a crime scene and assisting at mall displays and Bike to Work Week.

Front Counter Services

At Police Headquarters, volunteers greet the public, answer general questions, help in-take Criminal Record Checks and assist the Duty Constable as needed.
