Clarification: Our Request for Two Officers

There has been some misinformation regarding our request for two additional officers. We are not looking to start our own mental health team of police officers but rather add two additional officers to the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams. There are currently 4 teams that service 320 people and there is only 1 police officer assigned. We are looking to add two more to add the effectiveness of the teams.

Victoria, BC – This morning,  A/Chief Manak presented VicPD’s Mental Health Strategy (http://vicpd.ca/mental-health-strategy)  to Victoria City Council.  

“This strategy demonstrates the Victoria Police Department’s recognition of the impact of mental health on the lives of all citizens in our communities, and on our own employees,” A/Chief Del Manak said.  “The strategy clearly lays out how we intend to take a proactive person-centred approach to addressing mental illness in our communities.”

Temporary Cameras to be Deployed on on New Year's Eve

VicPD will be deploying temporary cameras on New Year's Eve in specific downtown Victoria locations to support our operations to ensure public safety during this family-friendly event.

The cameras will only be in operation during the expected time periods where there is a likelihood there will be large crowds. The cameras will be used for both the safety of the public and the safety of our officers.  The cameras will be in operation from 4 p.m. on New Year's Eve until 1 a.m. on January 1st.
