Freedom of Information

The Victoria Police Department supports and encourages open and transparent communications with the public. We understand that from time to time, Freedom of Information requests are made with the implication that the information being requested is in the public interest and important for the public to know. In that spirit, the Department will further facilitate that goal by placing F.O.I. requests for information other than personal information on this website, in order to ensure that the information is more widely available to the public.

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPP) Act provides a formal method of requesting information held by public bodies which is not available by other means and provides four basic rights for members of the public:

  1. The right to access information held by public bodies covered by the Act (generally Provincial and Municipal Government and their agencies);
  2. The right to request the correction of your personal information in records held by public bodies;
  3. The right to have personal information protected from unauthorized collection, use and disclosure;
  4. The right to have decisions made by a public body on an access request reviewed by an independent administrative body (the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner).

The Act is intended to be an avenue of last resort. It is to be used when the information is not available through other access procedures.
